Setup Instructions for Windows NT 4.0

This page contains instructions for Configuring Windows NT 4.0 to Connect to Interwrx's system.

NOTE: These instructions are for users not on a LAN system. You will need to contact your own LAN administrator for assistance if you are on one.

(1) Configuring Windows NT 4.0 to Connect to Interwrx.com

This section assumes that you will be installing and configuring Dial Up networking for the first time. If you have already installed this, please go directly to the second part of this file called trouble shooting: NOTE: You may be prompted for the Windows NT CD, so you should have it readily available.

Start by going into "My Computer" and opening Dial-Up networking. If dialup networking isn't there, proceed using the following method:

Click on the start button
Click on programs
Click on Accessories
Click on Dial-Up Networking

NOTE: If Dial Up Networking is not installed, it will ask you if you want to install it: You should click on "Yes". If a dialogue box pops up telling you that there are no RAS capable devices installed, and asking if you want to invoke the Modem Installer, click "Yes" and follow the on-screen instructions to install your modem.

In Remote Access Setup, enter your area code (if it's not already there) and click on Next. In the next box, make sure only TCP/IP is checked, then click OK. When prompted to restart your computer, you should do so.

Restart Your Computer. Once your computer has restarted, go to Dial Up Networking again in "My Computer" or with the following method.

Click on the start button
Click on programs
Click on Accessories
Click on Dial-Up Networking

You will get a warning that the phonebook is empty. Click "OK".

A New Connection dialogue box appears. Delete the default name, and type "Interwrx" in its place (Do NOT check the "I know all about phone book entries etc." box. If you do the connection may not work properly.)

In the next window, check ALL three boxes: "I am dialing the internet" and "Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect." etc.

Click "OK."

In the next window, click "More" then "Edit entry and modem properties".

Click on the "Server" tab. Make sure TCP/IP is checked. Make sure the box next to "Enable PPP Lcp Extensions" is up to you, but doesn't need to be checked.

Click on "TCP/IP settings." Make sure you are set for "server assigned IP address"

Choose "Specify name server addresses."
For primary DNS type: 209.210.172.9
Leave WINS entries as all zeros.

Make sure "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" are both checked. Click on "OK."

Click on the "Script" tab and make sure "None" is selected.

Click on "Security." Make sure "Accept any authentication including clear text" is selected. Click on OK.

Connecting To Interwrx.com

Click on "Dial". In the box that pops up, enter your username in lower case and your password in UPPER/Lower case. Check the box that says "Remember Password". DO NOT type anything into the space for the domain and click on OK.

Your computer will dial and connect to Interwrx.com. You are now online.

Troubleshooting (Once Dial Up Networking Is Installed)

(2) Configuring the Network Control Panel:

NOTE: You may prompted for the Windows NT CD, so you should have it ready to insert.

Double-click on My Computer, then open Control Panel.

Open the Network control panel.

The first field that pops up is Identification, You do not need to change anything in "Identification."

Click on the Services tab.

Make sure the following components are installed:

Netbios
Server
Workstation
Remote Access Service

If any are missing, click on the "Add" button and select the missing service from the list.

Click on "Protocols" tab. Make sure "TCP/IP" is installed.

Note: If TCP/IP is not installed, click on "Add" and select the missing service from the list.

Click on TCP/IP once to highlight it. Click on "properties". Ignore IP Address, WINS and Adapter. In Routing, ensure "Enable IP forwarding" is not checked, then click "OK."

Exit the Network control panel. Reboot the machine.

Configuring the Dial Up Networking Connection

Go to Dial-Up networking in "My Computer" or use the following method:

Click on the start button
Click on programs
Click on Accessories
Click on Dial-Up Networking

Under "Phone Book Entry to Dial" choose Interwrx.

Click on the "more" button and select "Edit entry and modem properties". The "Basic" screen opens.

Type in the phone number for your area. Enter 602-889-0499 for Greater Phoenix Metropolitan area or 702-932-1701 for the Las Vegas, NV.

Also here is the "Dial Using" dialogue box that lists which modem you're connecting with, and which com port it's connected to.

Click on "Configure" tab. A "Modem Configuration" box appears.

The initial speed should be set to 19200, 38400, or 56700 depending on your modem speed. Under "Hardware Features" section: "Hardware flow control" should be checked. "Modem error correction" and "Modem compression" are optional. There is a checkbox to "Disable Modem Speaker" if you wish to.

Click "OK."

Click on the "Server" tab.

1. Make sure Dial-Up Server Type is set to "PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus!, Internet."
2. Under "Network Protocols" make sure only TCP/IP is checked.
3. At the bottom make sure "Enable software compression" is checked.
4. Make sure "Enable PPP Lcp extensions" is or isn't checked. (It's up to you).

Click on TCP/IP settings.

Check "Server assigned IP address."
Check "Specify name server addresses."
Type in the "Primary DNS" field: 209.210.172.9 and "Secondary DNS": 209.210.172.6
"Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" should both be checked.
Click on "Script" tab. It should be set to "None".
Click on "Security" tab. Set it to "Accept any authentication including clear text".
Click on "X.25" tab. The network should be "none" with all else blank.

Click "OK."

Connecting to Interwrx

Click on "Dial". In the box that pops up, enter your username in lower case and your password as we set it up. Check the box that says "Remember Password". DO NOT type anything for Domain and click on OK.

Your computer will dial and connect to Interwrx. You are now online.

(3) Optional - Changing Your Flow Control Settings:

This section tells you how to edit the modem initialization string your modem uses when dialing into Southwest Link. If you are experiencing connection problems, it may be that a modem init string is neccesary. Southwest Link tech Support will be happy to work with you to trouble-shoot modem problems if you are not sure what init string to try. Adding An Init String For Modem

Open "My Computer" Open the "Control Panels" folder. Double click on "Modems."

Click on the modem you wish to add a string for. Click on Properties. Set maximum speed under "General." Interwrx recommends the following

baud rates:

For 14.4 modems:   19200 or 38400
For 28.8/33.6 modems:   38400, or 56700

Click on the Connection tab.

Click on "Advanced."

The modem init string goes in the box marked "Extra Settings"

NOTE: If you are using Windows NT 3.51, you should use the other NT file.
