Mac Troubleshooting

Common Mac Dialup/Internet Problems

If you are having problems connecting and/or staying connected, please follow the steps found in Macintosh setup instructions pages to be sure that your settings are correct. Below are some common connection problems not specifically covered in those pages:

If you don't seem to Have MacTCP or TCP/IP:
Some Macs don't have the necessary TCP files to dial up to an Internet provider using a modem. If you have determined that you don't have MacTCP or TCP/IP (which should be in your Control Panels folder in your System Folder) then you will need to locate your installation disks or CD-ROM and install the System Folder stuff.

Other Common Dialing/Internet Problems

If your modem is dialing but not actually connecting - or if it is connecting but disconnecting frequently:
If you have an older modem (more than two years old) or an obscure modem brand, your problem may be that the modem is having a hard time interfacing with Interwrx's modems. If you have a newer modem, another cause for this problem might be an improper modem initialization string. In either case, you may be able to correct the problem by changing the initialization string. To find a proper modem string, see the Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh (Modem String Page). To make the change, see the "Modem init:" setting in Step Three. If this doesn't work, it might help to call the modem manufacturer and get a proper initialization string for your modem.

If you are downloading programs that don't expand:
First you need to determine if you have Stuffit Expander. If so, you may need to adjust one of the settings in Netscape (or whatever program you are using to download files) to use Stuffit Expander for expanding downloaded files. If you don't have Stuffit Expander, you may download it through one of several shareware sites (see Software/Support Websites). Or, you may also download it here by clicking the link below:

StuffIt Expander

Then read the StuffIt Expander readme files to learn how to use it.
